Todays serene-place: Punjabi Poetry Part-1 (Baba Bulleh Shah)

Baba Bulleh Shah is a prominent Punjabi poet some of his poetries are part of Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Holy book of the Sikhs). I admire the simplicity of his words and his vision; every word feels so genuine and pure. He wrote these poems while yearning for the almighty but his poetries capture the true essence of love in the most pure forms.

I am a beginner in Punjabi, so please bear with me, as I understand the lyrics more I will update accordingly. Enjoy the poems and I hope as you read/listen… you feel the love :)

Following songs are sung by Wadali Brothers:

Charka: A woman longs for her lover, but she is afraid to display this emotion in public. She places her charka in her courtyard as she waits for her lover and weaves in the remembrance of her love. She weaves every thread in his memory; every sound the charka makes reminds her about the toomba (musical Instrument) that her lover plays. Her parents and in-laws keep telling her not to think of him so much, she keeps hallucinating that her lover has already returned as she wails, yearning for her lover. She seeks advice from her lover, that she is lost without him and wants to leave her house and dwell in the depths of his love.

Charkha

Charka – Sung by Wadali Brothers, poetry by Bulleh Shah

Lam, Le Chal Charkhe NooN Moorkha Oey
Le Chal Vich Koi Mat Fatoor Hove
Takla Sidq Yaqeen Di Maal Pa Ke
Manka Pawan Da Je Shaoor Hovey
Ohde NaaN di Koi Khareed Ker Ke
Vat PooniaN Je Razi Ghafoor Hovey
Ohdi Yaad Vich Kat Di RaiN Har Dam
Khore KeRi Vi Tand Manzoor Hovey

Ve Mahiya, Tere Vekhan NooN
Chuk Charkha Galli De Vich DhaNwaN
Ve LokaN PaneN Mein Kat Di
Tand TeriaN YadaaN De PaNwaN

Charkhe Di Kooker De Ole
Yaad Teri Da Toonba Bole
Te Nimma Nimma Geet CheR Ke
Tand Kat Di Hulare KhanwaN

Ve Mahiya, Tere Vekhan NooN
Chuk Charkha Galli De Vich DhaNwaN
Ve LokaN PaneN Mein Kat Di
Tand TeriaN YadaaN De PaNwaN

Babul Di SowN Ji NaiNooN Lagda
Veh Mahiya Mera Ji Ker da
Ghar Chad Ke Malang Ho JaNwaN

Ve Mahiya, Tere Vekhan NooN
Chuk Charkha Galli De Vich DhaNwaN
Ve LokaN PaneN Mein Kat Di
Tand TeriaN YadaaN De PaNwaN

Wasan NaeeN Dende Sorre Paeke
MeinooN Tere Paen Pulekhe
Hun MeinooN Das Mahiya
Tere Baj Kidher NooN JanwaN

Ve Mahiya, Tere Vekhan NooN
Chuk Charkha Galli De Vich DhaNwaN
Ve LokaN PaneN Mein Kat Di
Tand TeriaN YadaaN De PaNwaN

Tu mane ya na mane dildara

Tu mane ya na mane dildara

(Whether you like it or not my dear)

Asa ne tenu rab manaya
(I have accepted You as my God)

Das hor keda rab da dwara
(Tell me which other door shall i knock)

Asa ne tenu rab manaya

Koi kashi koi makke janda
(Someone goes to kashi for pilgrimage someone goes to Mecca)

Koi kumbh vich ja dhakke khanda
(Someone goes to Kumbh Mela to wash off their sins)

Paya jag te khule vich sara
(I have found the world in Your Feet)

Tugh bin jeena bhi kya jeena
(there is no life without you)

Teri chaukhat mera madina
(At your doorstep i have found my temple)

Kahin aur na sajda gavara
(I cannot bear to bow my head anywhere else)

Asane tenu rab manya
Tu mane ya na mane

Haste haste har gam sehna
(Smiling i will face all the trails and tribulations)

Raagi teri rada mein rehna
(i want to live in Your shadow)

Tune mughko shikaya hai yara
(You only have taught me my dear)

Asane tenu rab manya
